FACTS & STATS

  • On average, 260 cars are stolen in Australia daily, about 114 of them are in NSW.
  • Most cars are stolen on a Friday or Saturday night.
  • Vehicle theft includes cars, motorcycles, vans and light commercials.
  • Opportunistic theft accounts for 70% of stolen cars.
  • About half of the 70% are used in another criminal activity.
  • Almost 10% of all cars stolen are unlocked. 
  • In the quarter to March 2004, 22,242 cars were stolen in Australia.
  • In NSW alone that equated to 8431 thefts.
