FACTS & STATS On average, 260 cars are stolen in Australia daily, about 114 of them are in NSW. Most cars are stolen on a Friday or Saturday night. Vehicle theft includes cars, motorcycles, vans and light commercials. Opportunistic theft accounts for 70% of stolen cars. About half of the 70% are used in another criminal activity. Almost 10% of all cars stolen are unlocked.  In the quarter to March 2004, 22,242 cars were stolen in Australia.
